Listening is the doorway through which understanding walks in

The Joy of The Lord

1 . 11:41

Hey friends, welcome back. So listen, can we talk about something real quick? I was in Target the other day, just trying to buy toothpaste, and I ended up standing in the aisle for like ten minutes having a full anxiety spiral about whether I was buying the right kind. The right kind of toothpaste, y’all. And I thought, you know what? This is ridiculous. This is what anxiety does. It makes us lose our minds over toothpaste.

But here’s the thing. While I was standing there having my little meltdown, this song came on the store speakers. You know how they have that generic playlist? And I heard this line, something about joy, and it snapped me right out of it. And I remembered this verse that’s been changing my life lately.

Nehemiah 8:10 says “The joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Great, another Christian telling me to just be joyful when I’m literally drowning over here.” But hold on, because this isn’t what you think. This verse isn’t telling you to fake happiness. It’s actually revealing the secret weapon we’ve been ignoring.

See, the context of this verse is wild. The Israelites are standing there listening to God’s Word being read for the first time in forever, and they start weeping. They’re overwhelmed, they’re convicted, they’re probably anxious about all the ways they’ve messed up. And Nehemiah basically says, “Hey, stop crying. Go eat some good food, drink something sweet, and remember this: the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Not your joy. The Lord’s joy. Big difference.

Your joy is based on circumstances. The Lord’s joy is based on His character. Your joy disappears when life gets hard. The Lord’s joy is constant, unchanging, and here’s the kicker, it’s available to you right now, even in your anxiety.

So here’s what I’ve discovered. Anxiety and joy can’t occupy the same space. It’s like trying to be asleep and awake at the same time. Doesn’t work. And when you tap into God’s joy, not fake happiness, but real, deep, Spirit-filled joy, anxiety has to leave. It literally has no choice.

Proverbs 17:22 says “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Science has actually caught up with this. They’ve done studies showing that joy, laughter, gratitude, these things literally change your brain chemistry. They reduce cortisol, boost your immune system, and rewire anxious thought patterns.

God knew this thousands of years before we had brain scans. He’s been saying it all along. Joy is your medicine. Joy is your strength. Joy is your weapon.

But how do we access this joy when we’re in the middle of anxiety? Let me give you three practical ways that have absolutely changed my life.

Number one, remember what God has already done. Psalm 77:11 says “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.” When anxiety says “nothing ever works out for you,” you’ve got to stop and go, “Wait, that’s not true.” Remember when God provided that job? Remember when He healed you? Remember when He made a way when there was no way?

I literally keep a list on my phone called “God came through.” Every time something good happens, every time He answers a prayer, every time He shows up, I write it down. And when anxiety starts whispering its lies, I pull out that list and read it out loud. You can’t be anxious and grateful at the same time. Try it. It’s impossible.

Let me pray this with you real quick. Lord, help us remember. Bring to mind every miracle, every provision, every time You’ve been faithful. When anxiety tries to tell us You’ve forgotten us, remind us of Your track record. You’ve never failed us, and You’re not about to start now. Amen.

Number two, choose praise before you feel like it. And I know, I know, this sounds like toxic positivity. But hear me out. Acts 16 tells this crazy story about Paul and Silas. They’re beaten, bloody, thrown in prison, feet in chains, and it’s midnight. The most anxiety-inducing situation you can imagine. And what do they do? They start singing hymns and praising God.

Now, I promise you they did not feel like singing. Their backs were shredded. They were in pain. They were in danger. But they chose praise anyway. And you know what happened? An earthquake shook the prison, their chains fell off, and they ended up leading the jailer and his whole family to Christ.

That’s the power of praise when you don’t feel like it. It literally shakes things loose in the spiritual realm.

I’m not saying you have to be fake. I’m saying sometimes you have to praise your way into joy. You start with “God, I don’t feel joyful right now, but I choose to thank You anyway.” And something shifts. Psalm 22:3 says God inhabits the praises of His people. When you praise, His presence shows up. And when His presence shows up, anxiety has to leave.

Here’s a prayer you can pray. God, I choose praise right now, even though my feelings are all over the place. I thank You that You are good even when life isn’t. I thank You that You are in control even when everything feels chaotic. Let Your joy rise up in me as I praise You. I’m not faking it, I’m fighting for it. Amen.

Number three, and this one’s my favorite, laugh. Like, actually laugh. Proverbs 15:15 says “The cheerful heart has a continual feast.” And Psalm 126:2 says “Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy.”

God is not a boring God. Jesus wasn’t walking around with a stern face all the time. He went to parties. He told jokes. The Pharisees accused Him of being too fun, hanging out with the wrong crowd, enjoying life too much. That should tell you something.

Anxiety wants you to take everything so seriously. It wants you to catastrophize and spiral and lose your sense of humor. But joy fights back with laughter. Watch something funny. Spend time with people who make you laugh. Look for the absurdity in situations. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your anxiety is just crack up at how ridiculous it’s being.

I’m serious. The other day I was spiraling about something, can’t even remember what now, and I literally stopped and said out loud, “Brain, are we really doing this again? Over this? Are we serious right now?” And I just started laughing at myself. And you know what? The anxiety deflated like a sad balloon.

Let me pray something fun over you. Father, restore the joy that anxiety has stolen. Remind us that You are a God of celebration, of feasting, of laughter. Help us not take ourselves so seriously. Give us permission to enjoy life again, to find humor in the chaos, to laugh even when things aren’t perfect. Fill our mouths with laughter and our hearts with Your joy. Amen.

So here’s the bottom line. The joy of the Lord is your strength. Not positive thinking. Not pretending everything’s fine. But actual, supernatural, Holy Spirit joy that comes from knowing who God is and what He’s done.

Anxiety is strong, but joy is stronger. Fear is loud, but joy is louder. Worry is persistent, but joy is permanent when it’s rooted in the Lord.

John 15:11 records Jesus saying “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” His joy. In you. Complete. That means nothing’s missing. You already have access to everything you need to overcome anxiety.

So this week, I want you to try something. Every morning when you wake up, before you check your phone, before anxiety has a chance to start its daily broadcast, I want you to say this out loud: “The joy of the Lord is my strength today. I choose joy over anxiety. I choose praise over panic. I choose laughter over fear.”

Say it even if you don’t feel it yet. Say it especially if you don’t feel it yet. Watch what happens.

And one more thing. Zephaniah 3:17 says “The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”

Did you catch that? God rejoices over you with singing. The Creator of the universe is so full of joy about you that He sings. While you’re over here anxious and stressed, God is literally singing songs of joy over you. Let that sink in.

Let me close with one final prayer. Father, thank You that Your joy is our strength. Thank You that we don’t have to manufacture happiness or fake our way through hard days. Thank You that Your joy is real, it’s powerful, and it’s available to us right now. I pray that every person listening would experience a breakthrough of joy today. That something would shift in the atmosphere. That anxiety would lose its grip and Your joy would flood in. Remind us to remember Your faithfulness, to choose praise, and to laugh again. We receive Your joy right now. Not as the world gives, but as only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Alright friends, go forth and be joyful. Not because you have to, but because you can. And watch anxiety run for the hills. I’ll catch you next time.
